The US giant Google announced the launch of Google News Choices (News Showcase) in the US, which allows local press publishers to feature their content on Google News and in Google Suggestions, in the form of small “window displays,” according to CNBC.
The service was launched globally in October 2020, but was not available in the United States.
According to the giant network, “Google News Choices” will be launched in the U.S. over the summer in partnership with more than 150 media outlets, 90% of which are local or regional” and have offices in 39 out of 50 U.S. states.
One of the most prominent national media outlets in the service is the Wall Street Journal or Bloomberg, Reuters and Associated Press.
Google also announced that it had reached an agreement, without limiting the amount, with five organizations representing nearly a thousand local media across the United States.
The agreement provides for payments for online content as well as training programs, especially for digital use development.
Google News’ selections began in nearly twenty countries, especially in Europe, last October.
The launch of this service has helped calm the relationships between the press and the giant group around the world, regularly accusing newspaper publishers of using their content in their search engine without paying a fair price.
In concrete terms, the app allows press publishers to present, in Google News results or in Google Suggestions, small windows that offer a lot of content from their sites, as well as content directly corresponding to searches by internet users.
Google initially wanted “News Showcase” to be an enforcement tool for the new European legislation on neighbouring rights, which required it to pay press publishers for content used by its search engine.
But in July 2021, the French Competition Authority took a decisive stance on Google, forcing the American Group to separate the two topics.
